New Rakei Toa course will run in tandem with CISA

Twenty-five boys have signed up to the Cook Islands Sports Academy when classes start up next month.

With CISA now being accredited to teach level 3 units for the National Certificate in Sport, manager/tutor Kevin Iro says a few boys have returned from last year’s intake.

Iro says the long term objective is to be able to deliver level 5 units which can go towards a diploma course.

This will be the fifth intake since the Rarotonga-based academy began in 2006, with the course offering youngsters the opportunity to secure a semi-professional career in either rugby league or union.

But there will be a bit of a difference in 2010.

Iro has secured classrooms at Nikao Maori school where the sports-based programme will be based, along with Te Uki Tumanava, a trades-based programme for youth at risk, along with a new initiative, Rakei Toa, which will help to empower young boys with the skills and education they need during life.

“Having the three programmes under one roof will enable them to choose pathways whether they want to pursue a trade [through Tumanava] or sports [through CISA]. Because at the end of the day, it’s about developing a good work ethic to get through life and being good citizens for the country.”

Iro says they will be looking for a full-time tutor for the Rakei Toa programme which has the support and endorsement of the ministry of education.

Iro says he is thankful for the work that tutors Damien Beddoes and Lloyd Matapo are putting into the the CISA and Te Uki Tumanava programmes respectively.

Fifteen students have signed on for Aitutaki CISA this year under tutor Junior Tamati – with five girls likely to get on board. The Aitutaki academy will maintain close links with Araura College, as does the Rarotonga programme does with Tereora College.

The current intake of 10 participants on the Te Uki Tumanava programme, which has been based at the department of national human resources development’s (NHRD) trades training centre in Arorangi, is due to finish this month.

“The main positive is that these guys gain some respect for a high work ethic. A lot of the past students have secured steady jobs or they are studying and working towards their future goals.”

What’s in a name?

Thu
21 Jan

A sports-related debate, which is expected to stir up feelings, will be at the centre of a community meeting in Nikao this evening.

In early December, a series of notices ran in Cook Islands News, saying that 13 codes from Teotue to Pokoinu have been registered and affiliated under the umbrella of the Avatiu Sports Association Incorporated.

ASA president Albert Nicholas, who is also Avatiu-Ruatonga-Palmerston’s member of parliament, says he met with Nikao’s MP Ngamau Munokoa and some community members earlier this month, who voiced their concern over the name.

But Nicholas says there will be no change to the name of the association which was registered in 1984.

There was a push in the 1990s to change the name of the association to include Nikao but this has been resisted by some, including Nicholas. In the past, the rugby and league clubs have used the ‘Avatiu-Nikao’ names.

Two sporting entities, the Mongoose rugby golden oldies and Nikao Sokattak, are closely associated with the Nikao community.

Tonight’s meeting at 7pm will be held at the Nikao CICC Sunday School hall.

Big field gathers for Hugh Henry tourney

Thu
21 Jan

Although the official Rarotonga golf season has not yet started, one of the most popular golf tournaments is due to be held this Saturday.

This is the Hugh Henry Memorial Golf Tournament.

The Henry family have sponsored this tournament for many years now and it always draws a large field of entrants.

The draw for Saturday is filling up fast, so if you want to take part be sure to visit the Rarotonga Golf Club as soon as possible and pick your tee time from those that are left.

The Classic Pairs competition is well under way with four teams on 8 or more points while some are still on zero.

They have been concentrating on beating the people they are playing with but for the Hugh Henry they will have to concentrate more on beating the course.

Business House golf still continues and we are now getting to the final rounds.

It has been a great pleasure during the last few weeks to see some of our young golfers back on the island, including ‘golden girl’ Elmay Viking, on a break from Brisbane, and William and Rotana Howard back for a spell from New Zealand.

All three have improved their golf and it shows in the maturity displayed on the course. We all wish them well and will watch their golfing prowess grow with great interest.

In last Saturday’s sweep competition, William Howard showed his mastery of the course by carding a 67 off the stick – this was despite a double bogey on the 12th.

Meanwhile Elmay had a great round to card a 75 and be the best of the ladies and Rotana, after a shaky start, still managed an 80.

Club manager Haimona Browne tore the course apart on handicap by coming in with a +8 in this bogey competition – he won’t be on a 12 handicap this Saturday.

I hope to see all members on Saturday for the Hugh Henry Memorial Tournament and remember that the colours for the day are red and white.

Meitaki maata once again to the Henry family for their sponsorship of this popular competition.

Good luck to all golfers.

Games will be played every Wednesday evenings starting on February 3.

Stats comparable to last year’s

Sat
23 Jan

Recent statistics reveal that the total population of the Cook Islands is decreasing, though numbers of births, deaths and marriages are comparable to those from the previous year.

The Office of Statistics estimates that the total population for the September quarter of 2009 was around 23,600, reflecting a 4.9% increase from the previous quarter. However, the increase can be attributed to the influx of visitors during the World Youth Netball Championships and the Pacific Mini Games in August and September.

Barring visitors, the real statistic is closer to 13,000. In the September quarter of last year, the Office of Statistics pegged the population to be somewhere around 13,900.

MFEM registered 62 births for the September 2009 quarter, which parallels the number of births in the same quarter of 2008.

There were 18 deaths during the September quarter – an average of six deaths per month – and none were infants. The mortality rate is slightly lower than it was in the same quarter last year.

The Office of Statistics recorded 191 officiated marriages for the September quarter. Over 90% of those marriages were between non-residents. The statistics bulletin calls Rarotonga a “very popular” wedding destination on account of its “low cost”.

After a successful muster, the Cook Islands touch rugby season kicked off on Wednesday with the mixed teams taking to the field.

Thanks to the overnight rain, the Avatiu swamp lived up to its name – but teams pushed on with some high skilled games seen.

A total of nine teams have registered for the mixed competition with more teams still needed for the open men, women and under 16 divisions which kick start on Monday January 25.

The muster for the open men, women and under 16 teams was held on Monday night with touch players showing off their toned bodies – as if the festive season kai hadn’t affected their fitness or skills – though time will tell.

If you’re keen to get into touch rugby this season, it’s not too late to be associated with a team or to put together a team of your own.

If you are planning to take part in the mixed competition, you must be clear if you are a social of serious team as teams in the social competition will play for sponsor’s products while serious teams will play for trophies.

To register a touch rugby team for the 2010 season, call Daphne on 20514.

Results from the first day of mixed games – Rama 5 vs Young Guns 0, Marekos 6 vs Klasix 3, Vikens 10 vs 007 1, Club Raro Stormers 4 vs Westpac 9, Te Roxz 3 vs Rama 6.

Do or die for the Storm Chasers or Super Kings

Can the Storm Chasers take the crown form the Super Kings? Be at the Matavera field to find out.
Can the Storm Chasers take the crown form the Super Kings? Be at the Matavera field to find out. 10011711

Today’s Turtles Domestic Cricket League match is crunch time for the two teams facing off. After losing a game each against Royal Heat, the Storm Chasers and Super Kings will be giving all they have on the field as the winning team will progress through to the final.

On paper, both teams are evenly matched in batting and bowling ability, but Storm Chasers put out the stronger of the two performances against the Royal Heat and showed that they are in form while the Super Kings will need to show more focus at the batting crease if they are to either post or chase a good score.

Super King bowler Campbell Hockin, who has shown a marked increase in bowling speed over the past weeks, will need to bowl well in conjunction with Mamanu ‘king of swing’ Emile if they are to apply early pressure on the star-studded Storm Chasers batting line- up. Storm Chasers bowlers Ben Cummings, John Beasley and Moni Uini must carry through their excellent form into today’s match up if they are to triumph over the Super Kings.

Today’s game will played at the Takitumu Primary School grounds in Matavera starting at 12pm.

This do or die match is going to be action-packed so be there.

Storm Chasers too hard to catch on 233 runs

The Storm Chasers have earned their place in next week’s Turtles Domestic Cricket League finals after a brilliant win against the Super Kings at the weekend.

The Storm Chasers won what was later dubbed a ‘match winning toss’ to put the Super Kings out under the blazing sun to sweat it out in the field.

Sepa Tangimetua and Cameron Thorp opened up the batting for the Storm Chasers’ with Thorp improving on his duck last week with 4 runs on Saturday before falling to Super Kings bowler Mamanu Emile.

Tangimetua went on to score 26 runs before succumbing to the bowling prowess of Mamanu.

Enter Storm Chasers’ captain Ronnie Forbes to steady the ship and score the highest runs of the day with 80 runs from 80 deliveries – this was despite an equipment malfunction when Forbes lost his bat which nearly went for four!

Forbes was finally caught out by the Super Kings’ Daniel Webb with the Storm Chasers on 155 runs.

Pare Rongokea relished the opportunity to return to the cricket pitch reaching double figures with 10 runs.

Ben Cummings was also another stand out batsman for the Storm Chasers posting a very impressive 60 runs from 90 deliveries.

Best in the bowling for the Super Kings was Matt Beasley who took 4 wickets from 7.4 overs.

Campbell ‘Digger’ Hockin was another stand out bowler for the Super Kings taking 2 wickets in 10 overs.

Mamanu Emile took 2 wickets in 10 overs also.

Terry Williams and Daniel Webb both took a wicket each.

The Storm Chasers’ bottom order batsman did well to push the team’s total score to 233 leaving a daunting 234 target for the Super Kings to chase.

And after a day of sun baking in the field – the Super Kings struggled with the bat in hand.

Opening batsmen Bobby Hunter and Daniel Webb did their best but Webb’s wicket was smashed by a visibly impressed Muni Uini leaving the field with 9 runs followed by Hunter who scored 5 runs.

Space Raumea did his best to hold the team together with new partner Mamanu Emile having a short-lived batting innings with no runs.

Super Kings captain Apii Mamanu smashed the first six of the match and scored 26 runs in total before being caught out.

The Super Kings middle order crumbled with the in-form Bobby Hansen taking three wickets in just six overs.

Ben Cummings smashed two wickets with Muni Uini, John Beasley, Sepa Tangimetua, Cameron Thorp and Nga Ngere all taking one wicket each.

Super Kings were all out for 172 – 62 runs short of the target.

This weekend’s grand finals match between the Super Kings and Royal Heat is tipped to be the cricket match of the year as both teams will want to take out the inaugural Turtles Domestic Cricket League competition.

In the second match of the Oceania Under 20 Women’s Championship Qualifiers, the New Zealand team proved too strong for the Cook Islands.

The Cooks created a number of goal scoring opportunities in the opening period and it took New Zealand 39 minutes to score their first goal through Elise Mamanu – who herself is a Cook Islander.

New Zealand added three more goals before half-time.

In the second half, one Cook Islands player was shown a yellow card for a bad tackle, and New Zealand went on to score four more goals to bring the final score to 8-0.

The team was due to play its third and final match against American Samoa yesterday at 2:30pm CIT.

On the third and final match day of the Oceania under 20 Women’s Football Championship the Cook Islands team defeated American Samoa by 4-0. The Cooks who were in control of the match from the first whistle went on to score three un-answered goals in the first half through their powerful left-foot striker Regina Mustonen.

In the second half of the match the team continued their dominance with their midfield players supplying Mustonen again with another goal scoring opportunity to bring the final score to 4-0.

During the game the Cook Island team missed several goal scoring opportunities, however the 4-0 result against American Samoa and the heavy loss of Tonga to hot favourites New Zealand by 11-0 ensured the Cook Islands second place in the Oceania Football Championship tournament.
