High scoring games are becoming the norm of the inaugural Vonnia’s Corporate mixed 6 on 6 volleyball league played every Friday at the Telecom Sports Arena.

Last Friday saw round two games played where Vonnia’s Vikings registered the rounds highest score with 111 points against Te Aponga Sparkz who despite spikes raining on them, competed valiantly and with good humour.

Team Turtles Diggz was the next highest scoring team with 110 points against Westpac No Pacz who scored 67 points.

But the game of the day was between first round top scorers CITC Smackdown and Te Vara Nui with the CITC team edging out Te Vara Nui 81-72.

In fact, the win by Turtles Diggz propelled them into first place on the leaders table closely followed by first round leaders CITC Smackdown and Vonnias Viking in third place.

And although just two rounds of games have been played – teams are quickly improving their game making for tighter and tougher matches.

Tomorrow is round three of the league with the first three games serving off at 5pm followed by three more games every hour until the last game at 8pm.

Games have been running smoothly in the league thanks to some great refereeing and unlike other codes – not a single complaint has been registered about game officials to organisers.

With three games running at the same time – spectators are guaranteed to get an eyeful of action on the Telecom Sports Arena court.

Food and drinks are also on sale from the volleyball store so there’s plenty of reasons to make the TSA your first stop on your Friday night out.

The draw for tomorrow’s round three games will be published in Cook Islands News sports pages on Friday.

Full round two results – Edgewater Spike and Tykes 63 vs Sparklings 88, Manea Foods Boom 62 vs Be Cool like Ice 84, Westpac No Pacz 67 vs Turtles Diggz 110, Rampage 77 vs Maungaroa Heights 83, Smashing T 96 vs Turtles Fani Totoys 64, Manea Foods Jumbo 48 vs Airport High Flyers 99, Top Kopz 71 vs Killer B’s 93, Vonnia’s Vikings 111 vs Te Aponga Sparkz 64, CITC Smackdown 81 vs Te Vara Nui 72, RMD Spikers 56 vs Stingers 92, Pacific Divers Airbourne 94 vs French Connection 76, Airport Jetz 73 vs Telecom 81.

The Cook Islands contingent is in good spirits in Singapore, which is hosting the inaugural Youth Olympic Games (YOG) from August 14 to 26.

The Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games have some 5000 athletes and officials from the 204 National Olympic Committees (NOCs), along with estimated 1900 media representatives, 20,000 local and international volunteers, and 320,000 spectators.

Young athletes - aged between 14 and 18 years – are competing in 26 sports and taking part in the Culture and Education Programme.

The Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games aims to inspire youth around the world to embrace, embody and express the Olympic values of Excellence, Friendship and Respect. It will create a lasting sports, culture and education legacy for Singapore and youths from around the world, as well as enhance and elevate the sporting culture locally and regionally.

Meanwhile, the International Olympic Committee honoured the President of the Republic of Singapore, S R Nathan with the Gold Olympic Order, its most esteemed tribute to individuals who have upheld the ideals of the Olympic movement and have advanced the cause of sport in the world.

Dr Jacques Rogge, President of the IOC, bestowed the Gold Order on President Nathan in a presentation at The Float@Marina Bay prior to the Opening Ceremony of the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games. Following the award, 108 members of the International Olympic Committee were officially presented to President Nathan.

On August 13, the IOC had presented the Gold Olympic Order to Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong as well, in recognition of Singapore’s hosting of the inaugural Youth Olympic Games and the country’s outstanding merit in embracing and embodying the values and ideals espoused by the Olympic Movement. - MT

Team Cook Islands at the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore are in good spirits and competing well at this early stage of the event.

Swimmer Aaron Brown has swum in his first men’s 50m freestyle heat and placed second with a time of 26.70 seconds.

His sister Celeste was scheduled to compete in the women’s 50m freestyle yesterday.

Meanwhile, our sailing duo of Teau McKenzie from the Rarotonga Sailing Club and Aquila Tatira of the Aitutaki Sailing Club have been battling it out on the waters of Singapore against some of the world’s best up-and-coming sailors.

The sailing competition in Singapore is being held in the new Byte CII crafts which is a smaller and fast single-man vessel with sails that are used for windsurfing. Both sailors had competed in four races when the team report was sent.

McKenzie, who was the team’s flag bearer during the opening of the games, hasn’t had too much success on the water so far but that could easily change as competition continues.

Her placing after four races were 25th, 30th, 30th and 31st from 32 sailors in her class.

Tatira has placed 23rd, 23rd, 13th, and 27th from 29 sailors in the men’s division.

“When I first saw my sail, I noticed the Cook Islands Flag and then my name underneath.

I felt so proud, it’s like hoisting up my National Flag every day,” said Tatira. Meanwhile the national handball team have yet to compete however they’ve been training and taking in all the wonders of the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore.

The team send their love to their families back home and thanks everyone for their words of encouragement and prayers.

You can send messages to the team via Team Cook Islands administrator Siniva Marsters on smarsters@cisnoc.org.ck

Guns blazing at volleyball

Fri
20 Aug

Team tactics and set moves will be the highlight of tonight’s round three of the Vonnia’s Corporate 6 on 6 volleyball league at the Telecom Sports Arena.

Although the league is a ‘social’ event with emphasis on fun – some teams just can’t help but pull out their big guns and come out firing, which is of course encouraged to lift the standard of volleyball.

And the big guns CITC Smackdowns will be locked and loaded tonight as they will want to get back to the number one spot after being pushed back to second place by the cheeky Turtle Diggz crew.

CITC Smackdowns will face Telecom this evening while Turtle Diggz will meet Manea Foods Boom team.

There’s never a dull moment at the Telecom Sports Arena on a Friday night what with three action packed games running on the hour from 5pm to 8 o’clock.

Teams are reminded that games will start on time and if you fail to be on court with your team 5 minutes after the start of games – you forfeit the game.

If you manage to get on court within the 5 minutes, you will be penalized and 5 points will automatically be added to your opponent’s score.

So get in nice an early and avoid giving your opponents the upper hand.

Come & Play football wraps up

Fri
20 Aug

Cook Islands Football Association will wrap up a successful Come & Play programme, for this year, tomorrow (Saturday).

This programme ran for seven weeks attracting around 150 children between the ages of 5 and 13 on Saturdays. The response has been overwhelming from the young children and parents who have been turning up at the Cook Islands Football Association’s complex.

Fun small sided games have been a buzz for the little ones showing their peers what they think soccer is all about for them, scoring goals and winning. While technical aspects and team work have been the overall purpose for the older children, enjoyment of the sport was the winner of the day.

“This is the third year that this programme has been implemented. This year has seen the number of the children’s attendance increase significantly due to the parents support,” said CIFA’s technical manager Jimmy Katoa.

“Living a healthy lifestyle” which football promotes is starting to hit the parents and getting the kids out of the house on Saturday mornings for a bit of fun football in a relaxed atmosphere. It is a great way to start the day with parents helping out with coaching and refereeing is what this programme provides.”

Sparks will fly

Fri
20 Aug

After last week’s table-turning start to round two of the CITC club rugby season, this week’s match ups are sure to spring some more surprises.

Last week saw all first round winners fail to repeat their season start performances.

The Avatiu Eels were comprehensively thrashed by the Arorangi Cowboys 34-7 while the Ngatangiia Dragons struggled to find their form against the Takuvaine Reds who snuck in to win 10-6.

And the biggest surprise of them all was the Tupapa Panthers who finally sprung to life to register their first win – a thorough 31-0 beating over the Titikaveka Bulls.

So this week’s main match between the Dragons and Panthers is sure to send sparks flying.

The Panthers will be on a high after their emphatic win over the Bulls, however they face a somewhat hard to predict Dragons outfit.

But one thing is for sure – the Dragons will be calling for all their supporters to back them up on their home ground on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the Eels under 13 grade will host their Bulls counterparts today for the start of week 8 of games.

Their match will be followed by the Senior B grade clash between these two clubs.

Remaining Bulls grades will travel to the swamp for their games with the Eels on Saturday.

At the Happy Valley field, the Reds as hosts and hard fought winners over the Dragons last week should be on form this Saturday when they face the top of the table Cowboys who will be brimming with confidence after their Eels stampeding session last week.

Whatever colour you wear – this week’s games are shaping up to be crackers!

Get out and support your club.

Bodybuilder Alison strong-arms cancer

Fri
20 Aug

Top Shape Gym is pumped and ready to host next Saturday’s 4th International Asia Pacific Bodybuilding and Fitness Championships at the national auditorium.

Gym owner Puai Wichman is keen to use the event to inspire Cook Islanders to aim higher and stride over their hurdles just like Wanganui bodybuilder Alison Richards.

Here, Glenn Watson of the Wanganui Chronicle tells Alison’s story:

Cancer robbed her of a breast, but next week Wanganui woman Alison Richards will compete at the Asia-Pacific bodybuilding championships in Rarotonga.

The 49-year-old is living proof of what can be achieved with a steely-minded attitude and a zest for life.

Eighteen months ago, encouraged by her sister and brother-in-law who were both bodybuilders in Auckland, she joined the gym and began working out.

She wasn’t a big woman, nor was she petite. “Just average size really,” she said.

Cycling and indoor rowing kept her in pretty good shape, but she figured regular gym sessions would be good for her image and a confidence booster. With daily workouts on the walker with weights thrown in, she quickly noticed some pleasing results. She also discovered muscles she didn’t know existed.

“Progress came quite quickly,” she said. With the help of her 21-year-old son Jamie, who set her daily training regimes, she was well on the way to sporting the beautiful body. Then a shock – she discovered a lump in a breast. Her worst fears were confirmed and she had her left breast removed.

She could have sat around feeling sorry for herself, but Alison decided to get back to the gym. Several months later, Alison’s toned and tanned body is free of cancer and she’s about to pack her bags for the Cook Islands.

There she will compete for New Zealand in the senior women’s division in what will be her first international event.

Last week she was second at the Manawatu championships.

Getting to Rarotonga is not cheap – so one of her bosses has chipped in with $250 and Richard McVerry, of McVerry Motors, was only too happy to help.

UK schoolboys too slick and fast

Sat

Epsom College under 16 on the charge at the Takuvaine valley on Thursday.
Epsom College under 16 on the charge at the Takuvaine valley on Thursday. 10082021

Touring British rugby team Epsom College were just too slick for the local combined teams on Thursday in both the under 16 and under 18 games.

In the first match between the visiting under 16 squad and the combined Takuvaine and Arorangi team, the visitors’ composure lead them to a 12-0 advantage at the half time break in the bruising encounter.

And although the local lads mounted a serious second half comeback and scored a try for their efforts, it wasn’t enough to take out the match.

Local players who stood out in the match were loose forwards Robert Heather Jnr and Levi McKinley, who scored the local team’s try, and inside back Tiaan Mataora.

In the under 18 game of the day, the locals were given a taste of fine English running rugby as Epsom College ran in tries from all over the park.

It was great to see players with agility, skills and pace scoring tries.

Not to be outdone, the local team did try hard all game but lack of ‘go-forward’ and continuity at crucial times let them down.

To put things in perspective though, Epsom College are ranked in the top 20 English rugby schools and also boast current age grade English representatives including big mobile prop Kyle Sinckler and fleet-footed winger-entre Jordan Burns.

Ben Francis (centre) and Tom Flynn (fullback) have also won caps for Scotland and USA schoolboys respectively.

Outstanding for the local under 18 team were loose forward Bradley Heather, utility back George Turaki and energetic halfback Dylan Murray.

Both teams retreated back to a fantastic after-match function held at the Takuvaine rugby clubrooms, complete with team and individual presentations and speeches from team captains.

Congratulations to Takuvaine for being great hosts and to Arorangi for coming to the party with great players.

The touring English team depart our shores today – ka kite, aere ra.

The Dragons will need to watch out for the Panthers’ tough utility back Lua Tua who will roll into Ngatangiia for their battle today. 10080815

The revived Tupapa Panthers Senior A grade will head to Muri today to take on their hosts the Ngatangiia Dragons in today’s CITC main rugby match of the week.

The Ngatangiia Dragons need to win today to restore the confidence of their supporters after great form at the start of the season.

And while the Panthers may appear confident and buoyant, thanks to their first win last week over the Bulls 31-0, they desperately need to win today’s match if they are to seriously push up into the top four.

The Dragons danger man Sailosi Niagi will be keen to stretch his legs today – especially with the return of his injured centre partner Uso Sivo.

Expect to see plenty of action from these two as well as the triple threat Toa brothers – Thomas, Daniel and Alan – wreak havoc on the field.

This team will once again be held together by hardworking loose forward and captain Willie Kauvai who will need to fire up his team to stop the Panthers.

Players to watch for the Panthers will be their speed machine and fullback Conrad Piri, tough utility back Lua Tua and outside back Tatuava Tatuava.

Panthers: Bernard Okotai, Mana Natini, Tupou Faireka Jnr, Desmond Wildin, Robert Sword, Kore Herman, Ed Herman, Darren Manu, Lua Tua, Ben Samuel, Ben Tokorangi, Rua Ngametua, Tatuava Tatuava, Andrew Iroa, Tupe Willie and Corad Piri.

Dragons: William Kauvai Jnr, Pene Trego, Popo Tamarangi, Nooroa Samuel, Phillip Hunter, Elisa Ravalu, Uso Sivo, Phillip Taio, George Fatafai, Kevin Mapu, Thomas Toa, Daniel Toa, Alan Toa, Joshua Maui, Elia Tangimetua,  Aseri Manuquila, Maara Ioakopa, Moni Ben and Boasa Sotia.

In other A grade matches – the top of the table Arorangi Cowboys will play fourth placed Takuvaine Reds at the Happy Valley today in what should be a bruising encounter.

Meanwhile, second placed Avatiu Eels, who suffered at the hands of the Cowboys last week, will host third placed Bulls who will also want to get back to their season starting form.

Cricket sponsors will get to experience the fun and excitement of the sport in today’s ‘Sponsors Bash’ at Raemaru Park.

Cricket has boomed on the island in the past year thanks mostly to the staunch sponsors of cricket.

Cook Islands Cricket Association general manager Alister Stevic says that today’s sponsors bash tournament is to give sponsors the opportunity to share in the success of the sport – success they have helped achieve.

The tournament is sure to drive home the fact that cricket is fun and exciting.

A total of eight teams have been confirmed for today’s tournament and although the emphasis of the tournament is to have fun – there’s talk of ‘take no prisoners’ strategies by some of the teams.

ANZ Bank have entered two teams in the competition and will take on Edgewater Resort and Spa, The Computer Man, 88FM, Telecom Cook Islands, Motor Centre and Cook Islands News.

Cricket fans around the island are invited to come along and also share in the success of cricket and perhaps give some tips and hints to teams.

All teams are to be at Raemaru Park by 8am for the opening of the tournament at 8.15am and the first game will bowl off at 8.30pm.

Four games will run at one time which is sure to be an action packed spectacle.

After the presentations at 1.30pm an exhibition match between the Telecom High Performance squad and a general managers selection will be staged.

So get to Raemaru Park this morning and share in the fun of cricket.

Tune in to 88FM for an update on today’s tournament.

It was a great day of action packed fun at the Muri lagoon on Saturday for the V12 Corporate oe vaka races.

Twenty-five keen and well organised businesses turned up for the day kitted out with their bbqs, tents, chilly-bins and racing uniforms.

After two rounds, three semi finals, some fun games and a couple of dramas for good measure, the finals got underway.

The final was a mix of the old and new with Captain Tama’s Pirates, Budget Braz, Muri Beach Resort and Air Raro lining up for 250 metres of sprinting pain.

Captain Tama’s Pirates proved too strong for the challengers and took out the final in a time of 1minute 15 seconds.

This makes it two out of two for the glass bottom boaties who on debut won the February Corporate race event.

Second place went to newcomers Muri Beach Resort in a time of 1minute 19 seconds.

On reflection they may have peaked too soon as they set the quickest time of 1minute 15 seconds in the semi finals.

Third place was a battle between bikes and planes with the Air Raro crew just getting ahead of Budget Braz in a time of 1minute 20 seconds.

Finalists took home goodies which included products from the major sponsors The Bond Store, CITC Liquor, Frangi and Island Craft.

A highlight was definitely the kids novelty race which saw nearly every kid on the beach jammed into the canoes for their own 250 metre sprint.

Some definitely took the long way back to the beach but it was the crew steered by local champ Reuben Dearlove that eventually came across first.

Another highlight was the large number of paddlers who have never paddled before and are keen to do it again.

Next year CICA is planning on running a fortnightly business house series as a build up to the next V12 corporate race planned for February 2011.

So for those who missed out this time, don’t worry, there will certainly be another chance.

The national youth handball team at the Singapore Youth Olympic Games got its first taste of international competition last week.

Team administrator Siniva Marsters reports that after a test run alongside Korea – the Cooks faced off against top ranked youth handball team, France.

Marsters said that although the team prepared well, they knew it wasn’t going to be a challenging game.

France was dominant in every facet of the game and despite the huge difference in playing standards, the local lads kept their heads up right through the bruising encounter.

France was outright winners of the game scoring 58 points to the Cook Islands 4.

The team will now face Korea in their second match today.

Meanwhile sailors Teau McKenzie and Aquila Tatira continue to make improvements on the water and have completed 6 races each with race 7, 8 and 9 to be held today.

Swimming sibling Aaron and Celeste Brown have wrapped up their swimming competition at the Youth Olympics where they competed well but didn’t qualify for further than the heats.

“The whole experience of being here has been fantastic and we would like to thank our families and friends for your kind words of support for the duration of the games,” said Marsters.

Panthers 21 vs Dragons 16

Reds 20 vs Cowboys 20

Eels 51 vs Bulls 24

The Tupapa Panthers rugby team stunned the Ngatangiia Dragons on Saturday when they scored 21 points in the final 20 minutes to win the Senior A grade match of the week 21-16 against the shell-shocked Dragons.

The Dragons will be wondering what happened after enjoying territorial advantage and possession for the majority of this match.

At the 60th minute of this match the Dragons were actually leading by 13-0 and looking comfortable.

The Panthers then struck the survival button on the back of a resurgent forward pack effort led by number eight and captain Kore Herman supported by young prop Tupou Faireka Jnr.

The Panthers scored three tries in the final quarter of the match by fleet-footed fullback Conrad Piri followed by another try to tireless loose forward Alfred Manu.

The final ‘nail in the coffin’ for the Dragons and match winning try was scored right on fulltime by Tupapa’s elusive centre Rua Ngametua.

The Dragons, who dominated for main part of this match, will have to take a reality check this week as complacency obviously set in during that fatal final quarter.

Although it was an exciting finish to this game, too much possession was needlessly kicked-away and a display of ‘aerial ping-pong’ rather than being utilised sensibly.

The Panthers showed in the final quarter, through desperation and urgency, good ball retention, continuity, patience, composure and skill which they used to construct 3 well taken tries which eventually won them the match!

Best for the Dragons were energetic string-bean lock Moni Mato and busy hooker-loose forward John Mokotupu.

Good to see the Aitutaki-Panthers players in first five eighth Ben Samuel and midfielder Ruan Tare – both holding their own against their more experienced opponents.

Also good to see strong running ex CI and Northland representative and loose forward Atua Manu make an appearance for the Panthers too, his presence very noticeable.

In other Senior A grade games at the weekend, the Takuvaine valley rumbled with the battle of the Reds and Cowboys which ended in a 20-all draw.

The Reds, under the leadership of sevens icon Vaivase Samania, snuck in to score a try in the final minutes of this match, but the missed conversion from the sideline meant the team had to settle for the draw.

At the Avatiu Swamp the Eels strangled the Bulls 51-24.

The Eels win (and bonus points via 4 tries) now elevate the Eels to the top of the Snr A grade points table.

This week will see the Cowboys host the resurgent Panthers, Reds host the Eels and the Bulls will meet the Dragons.

Week 8 results – Takuvaine vs Arorangi (Takuvaine scores first) Snr A grade 20 vs 20, Snr B grade 16 vs 20, U16 grade 5 vs 40, U13 grade 0 vs 27, Ngatangiia vs Tupapa (Ngatangiia scores first) Snr A grade 16 vs 21, U16 grade 5 vs 53, U13 grade 0 vs 97, Avatiu vs Titikaveka (Avatiu scores first) Snr A grade 51 vs 24, Snr B grade 7 vs 17, U19 grade 34 vs 0, U16 grade 19 vs 10, U13 grade Avatiu won by default.

Powerade final

Mon
23 Aug

This Wednesday will see the final Powerade mid week challenge to be played at Arorangi.

The under 16 Arorangi Cowboys capitalised on the absence of key Tupapa Panthers players in the last challenge which they won 5-0.

It was heartbreaking for the Panthers who had managed to hold on to the challenge cup since winning it last year only to lose it to the Cowboys in the last challenge before the finals.

The Cowboys will want to bring their A game this week as they will face challengers the Avatiu Eels.

And knowing the Eels – they will want to win this match for the bragging rights of snatching the cup in the final challenge but the Cowboys have confidence and home ground advantage on their side.

Local volleyball association vice-president Brendon Heath is on his way to Brazil for five weeks of training ahead of the New Zealand volleyball season.

Heath, who departed our shores last night, is one of New Zealand’s top beach volleyball players and as vice-president of the local association he is keen to develop the sport here in the islands.

But first he is making a start on getting back into the swing of international competition.

He will be guided through his five week training session in South America by a Brazilian coach.

Heath told Cook Islands News that he is preparing for the New Zealand volleyball circuit which is due to begin in October.

He admits that he hasn’t done much training while on the island.

However he has stayed active by taking part in the various social sports events on the island including social mixed netball, basketball and of course indoor volleyball.

Heath will also represent the Cook Islands at the Federation de International Volleyball World Congress in Rome where he will discuss future funding and development of the sport here in the islands.

Heath will return home briefly after his training session before touring on the lucrative beach volleyball circuit.

Saturday’s cricket ‘Sponsors Bash’ was a smashing hit!

The day’s event organised by Cook Islands Cricket to honour and thank their sponsors achieved its goal in sharing the excitement and fun of the ‘greatest game in the world’.

Sponsors teams from ANZ Bank, Edgewater Resort and Spa, The Computer Man, 88FM, Telecom Cook Islands, Avarua Bakery and Cook Islands News competed in the tournament at the well set up Raemaru Park grounds in Arorangi.

Big sixes, cheeky fours, daring dashes between wickets and outstanding diving catches were some of the highlights of the day.

The rowdy 88FM crew spun some tricks while the Computer Man proved to be more than just IT experts.

In fact these two teams matched each other on the pitch with their game ending in an 84-all tie calling for a ‘super over’ to decide the winner.

ANZ banked on two teams to get them through and Avarua Bakery got a rise out of their opponents with their mixed bag team.

Telecom Cook Islands didn’t need ring-ins as they competently smashed the ball all over the park while team Cook Islands News tried to make the headlines but faced some stiff competition and settled for having the most fun.

Hospitality specialists the Edgewater Resort and Spa were just too classy as they emerged the unbeaten winners at the end of the competition.

The stand out player of the team was their humble college student Teremoana Punua Matai Jnr who had everyone in awe with his display of great cricket.

Edgewater team captain Chris McGeown, who was also one of the team’s secret weapons, says that the team certainly didn’t enter the competition with any expectations.

“Getting through to the finals was a bonus and winning the competition was an extra bonus for the team.” “It was a great tournament to encourage team spirit.”

McGeown went on to congratulate Cook Islands Cricket for their pro-activeness in looking after their sponsors.

“The format was fantastic because it was a mixed competition that brought out a range of skills,” says McGeown.

“This is exactly what sponsors are looking for and Cook Islands Cricket’s passion for cricket was really fantastic.”

The crew from 88FM were thrilled to take out second place, although they would have preferred to win, while The Computer Man came third.

4th went to ANZ Bank, 5th to Avarua Bakery and Cook Islands News took out 6th place.

Telecom placed 7th and ANZ 2 came 8th.

The sponsors tournament was followed by an exhibition 20-twenty match between the Telecom High Performance squad at the general managers selection which was thoroughly enjoyed by die hard cricket fans that stayed on to watch the match and support the Arorangi Cricket Club bar.

Cook Islands Cricket now looks forward to the start of the Computer Man men’s cricket season starting this Saturday.

Vonnia’s Corporate mixed volleyball team Turtle Diggz have maintained their early top of the table lead with an impressive win on Friday against opponents Manea Food Boom.

Turtle Diggz wasted no time in asserting their dominance with a comprehensive win over Manea Food Boom 116-50.

Their impressive score of 116 points was the night’s highest tally closely followed by team Stingers who defeated team Edgewater Spikes and Tykes 110-62.

Utanga just misses semis

Josh Utanga is determined to qualify for 2012 Olympics. 10062814

Cook Islands canoe sprint paddler Josh Utanga just missed out on a semi-finals spot of the K1 1000m by just 0.10 seconds at the 2010 ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships held in Poznan, Poland between August 19-22.

His sights are now set on the 2012 London Olympics and he is looking for sponsors to help him get there.

Utanga burst onto the canoe sprint scene at last year’s World Championships in Canada when he made the semi-finals in the same event after only spending 10 weeks in a canoe.

“I was pretty gutted to miss out but I am determined that this result will make me stronger towards my goal of qualifying for the 2012 London Olympics,” Utanga said.

For the second year running the Cook Islands paddler was invited to ICF Canoe Sprint Talent Identification camp which was held in Poland before the World Championships. The ICF received strong interest with more than 60 applications to this programme but only invited 30 athletes to participate. Athletes were selected for this camp on the basis of their previous performance, level and progress regarding the monthly test results.

At the conclusion of the camp all athletes went onto to compete at the World Championships.

As a member of the Talent Identification team Utanga narrowly missed out on the K1 1000m semifinal and was the second fastest paddler from the team over that distance. He went on to compete at the K1 500m and K1 200m and although he did not progress he recorded the fastest times from the Talent Identification team for each of these races.

“I have enjoyed my time here having learnt heaps and improved alot. I had a good crack and did my best. The experience of racing at the worlds is priceless and I have become more determined and motivated to reach my goal” he said.

Utanga will now be relocating his training base from the Gold Coast to his home town in Tauranga, New Zealand.

“I have enjoyed being based in Australia but it was not sustainable funding wise to stay there so it made sense for me to go home and continue to train from there with the support of my family and friends.”

An important part of canoe sprint paddler’s equipment is a quality K1 kayak that will be required for training and competition. One of the issues for Utanga faces is that he requires funding for a kayak. “I have grown out of the kayak that I have in Australia so I am hopeful that my story may appeal to a Cook Islands sponsor who could assist me to reach the 2012 Olympics.” Utanga said.

Phil Washbourn, the first local home in this year’s Air New Zealand International Triathlon, represented the Cook Islands at the Australian cross country championships on Saturday.

The race, which doubled at the Oceania Athletics Cross Country, was held in Brisbane and the field had competitors from Australian, New Zealand, PNG, Nauru and Fiji.

At 38 years of age, Washbourn was among the senior runners in the field and finished 40th, with final time of 45:35 for the 12km course.

Washbourn, who was living on Rarotonga at the time of the International Tri but has since returned to New Zealand, said “I was hoping to get ahead of the Papua New Guineans, but was a bit concerned about the knee, which has been pretty sore lately, so had to hold back a bit.”

Washbourn was selected for the race after finishing at the top of the Cook Islands Cross Country Series in June and July. Oceania Athletics contributed towards the costs of travel at the event.

Goldies at Nikao

Wed
25 Aug

Last Friday’s golden oldies rugby was played at Nikao.

Despite the late arrival of a set of jerseys from the Legends, the game kicked off before 5pm.

It started off at a frantic pace with the Sydney-bound team moving the ball along their classy backs to open the scoring.

Not to be outdone the ‘non-travelling’ team replied in kind putting Lady Ake in the gap to score.

The two other ladies who played on the day also dotted down.

In the ‘engine room’, Skewy did his duty anchoring the scrum and used his bulk to bash through would be tacklers.

Tangata, a Golden Oldie from Mauke was kept on his toes by his opposite – the elusive minister Wilkie Rasmussen.

Referee Simi Teiotu controlled the game by the book, as he penalised the rampaging Crash- fire Joe for over-running 15 meters without passing the ball.

The fast flowing game was enjoyed by 30 odd spectators including Navy and JK from Aotearoa.

At the after match function, the Mongoose’s sponsor Yvonne of Vonnia’s awarded ‘player of the day’ to Henry (Sharks), Andy, Pat and Nia (Mongoose), Anau (Tupapa) and TD (Legends).

Thank you Mongoose for the delicious kai and enjoyable night.

This Friday the game will be at Rutaki starting at 4.30pm.

Mongoose and the Sharks, supply the jerseys please.

As Indian said before leaving for a deserved holiday overseas, “The game must go on!”

CI Cricket colleagues and soon to be rivals this season, Koria Patia and Shane Thompson getting in some last minute practise ahead of round one of the Computer Man Round Robin this weekend. 10082312

Over 40 senior teams across the Cook Islands have been counting down the days to the beginning of the Summer of Cricket.

The wait is over as the Computer Man men’s cricket season begins this weekend.

With two new entrants (Avana and Titikaveka Cricket Clubs), a revamped format and with plenty of pride on the line, the upcoming season is set to be the most exciting yet.

Cricket clubs across Rarotonga have been eagerly awaiting the coming Computer Man men’s season, putting in weeks, and for some, months of preparation as they look to hit the season running.

Cook Islands Cricket general manager Alister Stevic says that in previous seasons the trend has been for clubs to have a get together a week or two out from the start of the season however the trend has been bucked this season with most clubs beginning training six to eight weeks out.

“A reassuring sign that off season clinics and last season’s improved playing and administration standards has rubbed off on players as they approach their cricket with a lot more professionalism and enthusiasm,” Stevic said.

The majority of clubs have reported a significant increase in registration numbers, especially in new, younger players.

Stevic says that this is a great indication that within only eight months the ANZ In Schools Cricket initiative and Cook Islands Crickets promotional activities are returning dividends.

Helping the clubs for seasons preparations has been strengthened club administration with an extremely well attended men’s council of clubs meeting held in early June and the seasons draw also released in early June has afforded clubs the opportunity to not only contribute to the structure of the season but also provide ample time to prepare.

The Computer Man men’s season begins with a round robin competition of nine weeks after which the top four and bottom six will split into two pools.

All fixtures begin at 1pm, the first round sees Tupapa take on the new Tavana All-Stars team at Victoria Park, ANZ Avatiu-Nikao play Titikaveka at Nikao Field (club to confirm field availability), defending round robin champs Muri Creeps play Turamatuitui Tupapa at Muri, Matavera host Takuvaine (club to confirm field availability) and Turangi play last season’s top 4 champions Arorangi at the Turangi Cricket Oval.

Be sure to get along to your local club and support your boys as they look to start the season with a win.

Cowboys face Eels

Wed
25 Aug

The Arorangi Cowboys taken on the Avatiu Eels today in the under 16 Powerade challenge.

The Cowboys are the current holders of the Powerade Challenge Trophy after defeating the Tupapa Panthers by 5-0 a fortnight ago.

The Panthers have held the trophy for the past four years.

The Eels have defeated the Cowboys twice this year in club matches – in round one, 34-0 and round two, 17-12.

On current form the Eels look to have the upper-hand, although the Cowboys have home-ground advantage and their rowdy-bunch of supporters.

Eels players to look out for today include dangerous backs – first five-eighths  Basil Matapo and midfielders Nigel Hoeflich and Stanly Tobia who have consistently ‘carved-up’ all opposition this year.

Cowboys players to watch include constructive loose-forwards Robert Heather Jnr and Levi McKinley.

Also deceptive inside back Tiaarn Mataora is another to keep your eye on.

See you at Raemaru Park today at 4.30pm to see who gets to hold the U16 Powerade Trophy for 2010 – $2 entry fee in aid of junior development.

U16 AVATIU EELS: Richie Ponini, Zeru Pera(Capt), Tutu Pouao, Jamal Pakitoa, Steven Hiro, Tuaine Unuia, Tamanui Nicholas, Kane Rima, Marcelo  Rairoa, Basil Matapo,  Nigel Hoeflich, Stanley Tobia, Rauti Ellison, Puna Hiro, Petero Teio.

U16 ARORANGI COWBOYS:  William Boller, Yves Obeda, George Isamaela, O’Neil Rongo, Andrew Purua, Levi McKinley(Capt), Dennis Rangi, Robert Jnr, Henry Ariihee, Tiaarn Mataora, Tokoiva George, Nathaneil Tairi, Ariimanu Shan, Calaise Mamanu, Tereinga Murare.

Touch elects officials

Wed
25 Aug

The annual general meeting of the Cook Island Touch Association was held last week at the CISNOC offices.

Current president Mark Brown made special mention that the numbers attending were the most that he had seen there in many years – an indication that people were interested in getting more actively involved in the sport.

The president’s report noted the highlights of the past year which included the success of the open men, women and mixed teams at the Pacific Mini Games and the successful running of the competition and the positive feedback from attending teams.

Accounts were presented for the last three years and these were happily accepted and passed.

Thanks and congratulations were given to Mark and Daphne Brown for the effort they have put into the association and to maintain a positive bank balance with so little support and sponsorship.

Due to upcoming political commitments former president Mark Brown has had to withdraw his involvement with the association although he will still support the code in any way that he can.

The association’s new office bearers are: president – Clem Fortes, vice president – Geoffrey Halston treasurer – Daphne Brown assisted by Moari Allsworth-Halston, secretary – Vicki Fortes, tournament directors – Brian Conning assisted by Brian Morgan (already nicknamed B1 and B2) and referees director – Ngavavia Tou.

The regular season competition is due to start on October 25.
